Social Anxiety Disorder -
Eating and Drinking

Why won't some people with social anxiety
eat or drink in front of others?

Anxiety Question:

Why won't some people eat or drink in front of others?
What causes this social anxiety?
Some of these people are not even overweight.

For instance, they'll say they're dying of thirst, so you give them something to drink, but they won't touch it.
They'll say they never eat or drink in front of others.

Anxiety Answer:

I don’t know if it is a social anxiety disorder, but I don't like eating in front of other people for two reasons:

  1. I'm a slow eater, I spend a lot of time chewing, and having someone ask me a question right after I take a bite of something just leaves me trying to talk with food in my mouth or waiting what seems like a minute to answer them.
  2. When you screw up eating, it is usually bad. I'll admit it; I am not the master of keeping all the soup in my spoon actually in my spoon on the way to my mouth. And something like that is not easy to cover up or laugh off.
