Separation Anxiety Causing Loss of Fur

Could my cat loose fur as a result of separation anxiety?

Anxiety Question:

My cat is 2 1/2 years old. We did have another cat that he grew up with but then she passed away about a year ago. Since then he has been loosing his fur and has scabs all over him.

I have given him iodine baths, regular baths, Frontlined him (he has no fleas), and sprayed hydrocortisone spray on him.

Any one have any suggestions on what to do for him? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Could this be separation anxiety? When my husband or I come home he's all over us and won't leave us alone.

Anxiety Answer:

I do believe cats grieve, and that separation anxiety can aggravate a lot of physical problems, but it sounds like this is a physical problem that hasn't been properly diagnosed and treated accordingly.

Is there a chance this kitty has picked up sarcoptic mange, from another creature or infected dirt or bedding? Cats also frequently suffer from kidney and urinary tract infections, which can also cause some hair loss and poor health. You've already spent a lot of money on various remedies that just aren't giving the cat or you any relief so I would get this little guy to a good vet.

As for separation anxiety, some animals would like to be loved 24/7, which is not realistic for most working people. Your guy is probably just thrilled to see you because he loves you and has been bored in your absence. If you're ready to open your hearts again, a little friend might keep him occupied while you're away.

But I would certainly determine what his medical problem is first, before introducing another animal.

Be Happy Where You Are Right Now

"Happiness doesn't come from continually achieving goals, losing lots of weight, owning big houses or wearing fancy clothes and jewelry. These can contribute, sure, but real happiness comes from being happy with who you are, where you are and who you are with right now. Happiness doesn't come from without, it comes from within."
