Help for Performance Anxiety
What can I do for performance anxiety?
Anxiety Question:
What can I do for performance anxiety?
During the first two minutes of having to do the talking in any of my office meetings, presentations or especially round tables, my voice shakes, heart pounds and I experience extreme anxiety symptoms.
I almost feel ashamed of being noticed. But after two minutes I am normal. I have tried every possible relaxation technique on the web and off. Can someone help, please?
Anxiety Answer:
If you are interested in medication treatment, Beta Blockers can be very effective. Taken in small doses shortly before one anticipates having to perform or do a public presentation, they can do an AWESOME job in helping to control the autonomic symptoms of performance anxiety (rapid heart rate, sweating, heavy breathing/hyperventilating, feeling flushed).
If you have tried behavioral strategies for this without success, this may be the next step for you. And, in such cases when they have worked for people, sometimes just having them on hand, knowing that they can be used can make all the difference in the world.
Talk to your doctor about this. I have prescribed them before for patients with performance anxiety, with very good results! They are available only by prescription, and in most cases are very safe to take, especially in such low dosages, though people should not be taking Beta Blockers if they have certain health conditions.
