Generalized Anxiety Disorder Can Cause
a Lifetime of Worry
Before Martha was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder,
she couldn't understand why she felt "different"
from the other people in her office.
"Everybody else in the office was always joking and laughing and sharing stories about their weekends, and all I could seem to do was worry. I felt tense all of the time. I couldn't understand why the people around me never seemed to worry about anything."
Once she was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, Martha was able to get help for her symptoms and begin to understand how to control them. She was gradually able to gain more control of her life and learn to relax.
People who are affected by generalized anxiety disorder suffer from persistent worry and tension that is much worse than the anxiety everybody suffers from time to time.
People who suffer from this anxiety disorder experience an exaggerated state of worry about such matters as health, money, family or work. Although most sufferers realize that their anxiety or worry is excessive or unwarranted, they feel like there is nothing they can do to stop it.
The high level or chronic state of anxiety associated with generalized anxiety disorder can make ordinary activities difficult or even impossible.
In her remarkable book titled "Calming Words," Dr. Jeannette Kavanagh offers hope for people who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder symptoms. She points out that while everybody experiences anxiety symptoms from time to time, there are some warning signs that signal the need for help.
The inability to concentrate, sleep disturbances, feeling overwhelmed, sexual dysfunction, a change in eating habits, mood changes, negative thought and excessive worry are all signs that generalized anxiety disorder is taking over your life.
People with generalized anxiety disorder are unable to relax and may startle easily. The intense anxiety is often accompanied by physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, muscle tension and gastrointestinal problems.
If you or someone you love suffers from generalized anxiety disorder talk to your doctor about getting the help you need. You do not have to spend your whole life in a state of worry and unhappiness.
