Anxiety & Panic Attacks at the Dentist
Whenever I go to the doctor or dentist I freak out...
Anxiety Question:
Whenever I go to the doctor or dentist I freak out. I am terrified of needles all together. I am not scared of the pain at all, which is weird.
A few minutes after I get a shot, I usually get very, very hot. Then, I start feeling very weak and my head starts spinning or I feel very nauseous.
What is wrong with me? Someone suggested that I may be having anxiety or panic attacks. What can I do to help this?
Anxiety Answer:
You have a phobia or irrational fear of needles, which can psychologically induce the physical symptoms that you describe, such as feeling faint, dizzy or nauseous.
Lots of people fear needles; you're not alone. There are thousands of people who experience the same feelings that you describe when you get shots.
Lots of things can cause phobias, anxiety, or panic attacks, especially medical or dental procedures.
They say that misery loves company, so now that you know these feelings are not yours alone, but are shared by many people - that alone can ease your anxiety.
