Newer Anxiety Medications
Have Fewer Side Effects
When she first began her research on anxiety medications,
Linda was baffled by the choices.
"It was bewildering to me because I knew that I needed anxiety medication but I was having trouble understanding the classes of anxiety medication and how they would help my symptoms.
After discussing the options with my doctor he prescribed the anxiety medication that he thought would work best for me. Anxiety medication has changed my life in a very positive way."
The medications used in the treatment of anxiety have changed radically over the past few years. Anxiety medication treatment often involves either anxiolytics (anti-anxiety medication) or some of the newer antidepressant medications because anxiety and depression are so closely linked.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (like Prozac, Zoloft and Citaloprom) have fewer side effects than older anxiety medications and are very effective in handling anxiety and depression.
Tricyclic antidepressants are being used less frequently than other anxiety medications. The effect of these drugs is not apparent for three to four days and can take up to 30 days. Some of these anxiety medications are Tofranil, Nortab, Sinequin and Tolvon.
Benzodiazapines, like Valium and Xanax are sometimes used to treat anxiety but they should only be used for short-term management because they are addictive.
Betablockers (like Inderal) are useful for anxiety sufferers who have cardiovascular symptoms such as rapid heart rate, palpitations and tremors. Adverse side effects of these anxiety medications include low blood pressure and nightmares. Patients with bronchial asthma or diabetes should not take these medications as they can interfere with other treatments.
In his informative and well-written book titled "Panic Away," Joe Barry explains to readers that using anxiety medication is not a sign of weakness. "There is some misleading information out there that causes people to think they are weak just because they need medication. There are millions of people who could not make it through the day without anxiety medications."
