Gossip - Anxiety Disorder Defense?

Which anxiety disorder defense mechanism
would you attribute the majority of gossip to?

Anxiety Question:

I'm taking a Mental Health course; my question is: which anxiety disorder defense mechanism would you attribute the majority of gossip to (hurtful, mean gossip).

I'm thinking devaluation; sometimes it can be projection, too.
Has anyone studied this topic?

Anxiety Answer:

Well, I agree that gossip as an anxiety disorder defense could be projection in that they likely feel very insecure about themselves so they put their own insecurities on others, but in that sense, you could also call it deflection as they are redirecting attention to someone else to avoid scrutiny of themselves by others.

However, I'm not sure about devaluation as that is the individual dealing with emotional conflict or internal or external stressors by attributing exaggerated negative qualities to self or others; I suppose it could be devaluation, but I would go with the two I mentioned first before that.

Dealing with Anxiety Advice

So empowered, I went back to school!

As soon as I received your tape, "Dissolving Panic and Anxiety", I started listening to it every night before I fell asleep.

After a few weeks, I started to see changes in my thought patterns. I began to feel more confident within myself and found myself having a more positive attitude about life in general. Several weeks later, I felt so empowered I went back to school to study accounting. I'm loving it and I hold a 4.0 grade average - and I never used to love school!

I am thankful to have come across a tape that gives such positive results. I don't have the anxiety like I did before!

Sincerely,
Celina Weeks, CA
