What Does Anxiety Disorder do
to Thoughts?

She really is not "crazy" so what does anxiety do to her thoughts?

Anxiety Question:

A friend of mine suffers from anxiety disorder. I try to help her when she is having a set back. She says that her thoughts get disturbing when she is experiencing anxiety. What does that mean? She really is not "crazy" so what does anxiety do to her thoughts?

Anxiety Answer:

Well when I have anxiety attacks they tend to be at night when I'm in bed and alone. I start getting anxious, my thoughts start racing and I get convinced that "something bad is going to happen."

This varies, sometimes it's that something will happen to me, sometimes that it will happen to someone I care about, usually that my brother is going to crash his car and die.

It's a totally irrational thought, it's not triggered by anything in particular, and although I know it's illogical, at the time I totally believe it and I can't do anything to convince myself otherwise.

I lie totally immobilized by fear, scared that if I move it will make the bad thing happen; it sounds crazy, but that's what happens.

I don't know, maybe there's more to my problem than anxiety disorder, but try asking your friend what she worries about specifically and then try to help her cope with that.
